About Pencak Silat

Pencak Silat is a martial art believed to originate from the Malay Archipelago and Indonesia's heritage. It translates to "fighting by many techniques of self defense". It has four main components - mental spirit, art and culture, self defence and sport.

In the sport context, Pencak Silat is categorised into two categories; Match (Tanding) & Artistic (Seni). Match category is sub-divided into different weight class while Artistic is divided into Single (Tunggal), Double (Ganda) and Team (Regu).

In Tunggal, a persilat (a practitioner of pencak silat) performs 14 package of jurus tunggal in three minutes. Movements include bare hand and weapon.

In Regu, three presilat performs 12 package of jurus baku in three minutes. movement must be synchronised.

In recent years, Pencak Silat has spread to many countries outside South East Asia including Holland, Germany, Italy, South Africa, France, Japan, and more.
